Toby doing the Ultraman sequence

Haven't posted anything for a long time, but I kept working just rather slow. Since I wasn't too happy with Toby's face, his eye socket in particular, so I've been polishing up his head and facial expressions a bit these days.

Dug up this test movie accidentally yesterday, so, here it is~!

hmm... maybe I should not be using displacement map for the chunks afterall...

Curry sauce reference

Rice with Japanese currysauce and brussel sprouts on plate

The sauce, again, uses a displacement map created with photoshop. But I will do a test with Zbrush.

Rice: displacement map revised

This revised displacement is drawn in photoshop layer by layer and rice by rice. Very time consuming, but the effect is much better, solved the rice clump problem.

Rice

1. Rice as particles: very inefficient


2. Rice as polygon painted on dome surface: heavy scene, too many polygons


3. Rice polygon painted on displaced polygon surface: still heavy


4. Displaced polygon surface: works, but displacement map needs to be revised

Brussel sprouts

Texture will be changed.

Chocolate Sundae Deluxe 2

Revised: Glass and Chocolate Syrup.

1. Glass is remodelled and reflection map is mapped to reflected colour.
2. Syrup is first painted on with 3D paint effect, and touched up in Photoshop

Chocolate Sundae Deluxe

1. Started with a rough model.
2. Displacement map to create the chocolate syrup and bumpy surface of the ice cream.
3. Used a layered-shader to create shiny blinn material for the chocolate syrup and matte lambert material for the ice cream.
4. Remodelled the sundae glass.

Props (food)

To take a break from Toby, I'm currently working on the props (food):

3D models: Everything built in Maya, might have brushed up Toby's head a bit, with Zbrush
Textures: Photoshop
Renderer: Most 1st draft storyboard images were rendered with 3Delight, but will switch back to MentalRay from now. Love 3Delight, but the renderfarm that I will eventually use uses MentalRay, so...

Toby: before Learning Physics...

This animation started sometime in August 2007. Toby came earlier though, he appeared as "Toby the Flyboy" sometime in March 2007. He looked so bad that it is embarrassing to put him here... but then, i'll put him here anyways... just to show the "before and after"...

Toby could have been the brother of a character, Todd, that I created in 2002 for another animation, "Todd's Misfortune".

Problems on upperbody:

• palms look too boney
• sleeves and hands
• facial expressions are limited -> inflexible eyebrows
• needs teeth and a tongue
• ... perhaps Toby's head should be smaller...
